Legal Buying Guide
Effective date: April 5, 2026
This page provides general information for users of ShooterBoard (shooterboard.com) who are looking to purchase items through the platform. It is not legal advice. You are solely responsible for complying with all applicable federal, state, and local laws.
ShooterBoard is a platform only — we do not buy or sell items, we are not a party to any transaction, and we do not process payments.
1. Before You Contact a Seller
- Know your state’s laws and your local requirements before you start looking. Different states have very different rules about what you can possess, how transfers must be conducted, and what permits or licenses you may need.
- Know federal law basics. Interstate firearms purchases must go through an FFL in your state of residence. You cannot legally receive a firearm shipped directly to you from a seller in another state (except through an FFL).
- If you are unsure about any of the above, plan to use an FFL transfer from the start. It is always the safest option.
- Choose your FFL in advance. Call or visit a local FFL, confirm their transfer fee and process, and make sure they will accept the transfer from a private individual.
2. Use Lawful Transfer Methods
- If a firearm must go through an FFL in your state, use an FFL. No exceptions.
- If an item is legal only with specific procedures (permits, registration, waiting periods, background checks), follow those procedures completely.
- For NFA items (suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, etc.), additional federal procedures apply — including ATF Form 4 and tax stamps. Do not proceed without understanding the full process.
- When in doubt, ask your local FFL or consult a firearms attorney in your state.
3. Do Not Become Part of an Illegal Transfer
Do not ask for or agree to:
- “No paperwork” transfers where paperwork is required by law
- Shipping to a different person, a different name, or a different state to bypass legal requirements
- False statements on ATF Form 4473 or any other government form
- Forged, altered, or fraudulent documents
- Any arrangement designed to circumvent background checks, age requirements, FFL requirements, or prohibited-person restrictions
Participating in an illegal transfer — even unknowingly — can result in serious federal and state criminal penalties.
4. Watch for Scam Patterns
Red flags to watch for:
- Seller refuses to provide clear, detailed photos of the actual item
- Seller pressures you to pay quickly (“someone else wants it,” “today only”)
- Seller asks for unusual payment methods (gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency to unknown wallets)
- Price is dramatically below market value with a rushed or emotional story
- Seller wants to move all communication off-platform immediately
- Seller claims to be deployed, traveling, or otherwise unable to meet or answer questions
- Listing uses stock photos or manufacturer images instead of photos of the actual item
- Seller requests personal information beyond what is needed for the transaction
If you see these patterns, stop. Walk away. Report the listing.
5. Meeting in Person
- Meet in public places with security cameras — busy parking lots, police station safe-trade zones, coffee shops, bank lobbies
- Bring a friend or tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return
- Inspect the item carefully before agreeing to the purchase — check condition, serial numbers, included accessories, and that the item matches the listing description
- Do not go to a stranger’s home, and do not invite them to yours
- Keep a written record of what was agreed (saved messages are sufficient)
6. Paying Safely
- Do not send advance payment to strangers — especially via wire transfer, gift cards, or irreversible methods
- For in-person transactions, cash at the time of exchange is generally safest
- Understand the rules, limitations, and scam risks of any electronic payment method you choose
- Keep documentation of what was agreed, what was paid, and how payment was made
- Be wary of overpayment schemes — if a buyer (or supposed buyer) sends you more than the agreed price and asks for a refund of the difference, it is almost certainly a scam
7. Receiving Shipped Items
- Insist on tracked and insured shipping
- Agree in advance on how loss or damage during shipping will be handled
- Confirm the lawful destination and lawful process — if you are receiving a firearm from out of state, it must go through an FFL in your state of residence
- When you pick up the item at the FFL, bring valid government-issued photo ID and follow the dealer’s instructions for completing the transfer
8. If Something Feels Off
Walk away. There will always be another deal. No item is worth the risk of fraud, an unsafe meeting, or an illegal transfer.
9. Report Problems
